Lucas

Lucas, Kansas, is a small yet vibrant community located in the northeastern corner of Russell County in north-central Kansas. Established in 1877, the city was named after Lucas Place in St. Louis, Missouri. Despite its modest size, Lucas has gained recognition as the "Grassroots Art Capital of Kansas," boasting a rich cultural heritage and a strong sense of community.


The city is renowned for its unique attractions, including the Garden of Eden, an outdoor sculpture environment created by local sculptor Samuel P. Dinsmoor between 1905 and 1927. This site features over 150 concrete sculptures and a "log cabin" made of limestone, reflecting Dinsmoor's interpretations of biblical stories and political commentary. Additionally, the Grassroots Arts Center in downtown Lucas showcases works by self-taught artists, further cementing the city's reputation as a hub for grassroots art.

The city hosts several annual events, such as the Adams Apple Festival, which includes an art show, fun run, and various contests, fostering a lively and connected community spirit.
